Watch: Science fiction revolution: The pioneers

George Lucas and Steven Spielberg were pioneers in a science fiction revolution in film. Lucas reinvented the blockbuster with the hugely popular Star Wars trilogy from 1977, while Spielberg created a cinematic monument for a whole generation with the emotional spectacular E.T. in 1982, which still influences filmmakers today.
